Sean Mcallister: Between the Self and Reflection

The Institute for Contemporary Art Yerevan together with its Project Lab Initiative, [NɛST] community center and artist residency is pleased to introduce the noted British documentary filmmaker, Sundance-winner Sean Mcallister to the Armenian audience and the professional circles in the frames of British week organized by the British Embassy in Armenia.The program is implemented with the support of the British Embassy and curated by Taguhi Torosyan.

The proposed programme consists of series of retrospective screenings and meetings with the filmmaker, for wider and more specifically, the professional audience. It is aimed at exchange and knowledge-sharing with local emerging artists and filmmakers as well as the recognition of Sean’s oeuvre in Armenia. The programme includes a masterclass for public and a workshop for emerging filmmakers.

The retrospective represents exceptional cinematic reflections on societies and ordinary people’s lives in turmoil zones of Middle East in the context of recent geopolitical developments including the Iraq war, Arab Spring, the fragmentation of Israeli/Palestinian society/ies,and civil war in Syria as well as economic downturn in Japan, the relationship between the British society and asylum seekers.

BACKGROUND

After leaving school at 16 Sean Mcallister worked in and out of factories before finding a camera and filming his way into the National Film School. He graduated in 1996. Since 1996 Sean McAllister has made films for both BBC and Channel 4; working in the UK, Israel, Iraq, Japan, and most recently Syria, and The Yemen. In 2005 his film ‘The Liberace Of Baghdad’ (about Iraqi pianist Samir Peter) won the Special Jury Prize (World Documentary) at the Sundance Film Festival.

Sean is currently filming across the UK, and in the Middle-East.
